The Continuous Strength Method for the design of stainless steel hollow section beam-columns

The Continuous Strength Method (CSM) is a deformation based design approach that provides accurate cross-section resistance predictions by making rational allowance for the interaction between elements, partial spread of plasticity and beneficial effects strain hardening. CSM can be used in conjunction with advanced analysis members frames, but, hand calculations, member-level stability checks are currently limited to stainless steel hollow section columns failing flexural buckling. Extension subjected combined compression bending moment presented this paper. on numerical results existing experimental data collected from literature members, including stocky slender cross-sections. Comparisons demonstrate adoption equations both current revised factors considerably improves accuracy beam-column capacity beam-columns sections shows similar obtained using Eurocode 3 CSM. reliability proposed demonstrated through statistical analyses performed accordance EN 1990.
